NBC Southwest Florida television host and financial professional explores how principles taught thousands of years ago remain relevant to today’s financial, tax, retirement and estate planning decisions
Vincent A. Virga, author, financial advisor and host of NBC Southwest Florida’s The S.M.A.R.T. Approach to Retirement, has announced the release of his newest book, Stocks and Bonds: Not Just About the Market, which explores the connection between timeless biblical wisdom and modern financial decision making.
Rather than writing another traditional book about what to buy, when to invest or where markets may be headed, Virga takes readers in a different direction. The book examines how principles found throughout Scripture, including stewardship, patience, discipline, wise counsel, generosity and responsibility to future generations, remain remarkably relevant to financial decisions today.
“Markets will rise and fall. Presidents, congressmen and senators will come and go. Tax laws will change,” Virga said. “But timeless principles endure. Many of the principles behind wise financial decision-making were being taught thousands of years before the modern financial markets existed.”
The inspiration for the book came unexpectedly.
One Sunday morning, Virga was on his way to get coffee when he noticed the words “Stocks and Bonds” on the entrance of a building. He had seen the words before, but this time they struck him differently.
“I felt God speaking to my heart in that moment,” Virga said. “The message was simple. Write the book. That started me on a journey of looking more deeply at Scripture and recognizing how much of the wisdom we apply to financial planning today has parallels in biblical principles that have existed for thousands of years.”
Throughout Stocks and Bonds: Not Just About the Market, Virga uses Scripture to introduce conversations about investing, retirement, tax planning, estate planning, stewardship and legacy.
The book does not present the Bible as an investment manual. Instead, Virga demonstrates how biblical principles can provide a practical framework for approaching financial decisions with greater wisdom, discipline and purpose.
After more than three decades in financial services, Virga believes one of the most important lessons he has learned is that financial outcomes are influenced by more than mathematics.
Human behavior matters.
Fear can cause investors to abandon long-term plans during difficult markets. Greed can encourage excessive risk when markets are strong. A lack of preparation can create unnecessary financial challenges. Pride can prevent people from seeking counsel when they need it.
Those behaviors are not unique to modern investors.
“Technology has changed tremendously. Financial markets have changed. The products we use have changed,” Virga said. “Human nature hasn’t changed nearly as much. Fear is still fear. Greed is still greed. Patience still matters. Discipline still matters. Wisdom still matters.”
Legacy also plays a significant role in the book.
Virga challenges readers to think beyond simply accumulating and transferring financial assets. He believes a meaningful legacy also includes the values, wisdom, faith, generosity and financial habits passed from one generation to the next.
“You can leave someone money without leaving them wisdom,” Virga said. “Legacy is about much more than the assets we leave behind. It is what we taught, how we lived, whom we helped, what we believed and what the next generation learned from us.”
Stocks and Bonds: Not Just About the Market is written for readers across different stages of their financial lives, including families building wealth, business owners, pre-retirees and retirees. It is also intended for readers interested in exploring the relationship between faith, stewardship and financial literacy.
Virga hopes the book reaches beyond people already comfortable discussing faith.
“Someone may initially pick up this book because they want to learn something about investing, retirement or financial planning,” Virga said. “My hope is that somewhere along the way, they encounter a piece of biblical wisdom that speaks to another part of their life and perhaps even encourages them to explore their relationship with God more deeply.”
That objective reflects one of Virga’s central life philosophies.
“I’ve always believed that one seed has the potential to create a harvest,” he said. “If something in this book plants one seed that helps someone make a wiser decision, strengthen their family, become a better steward or grow in their faith, then the purpose for writing it has been fulfilled.”
Virga also sees the book as part of a larger conversation about the role faith and personal responsibility have played throughout American life.
“Throughout our nation’s history, faith, morality and personal responsibility have played an important role in shaping character and individual responsibility,” Virga said. “My book explores how many of those same timeless biblical principles continue to help provide a practical framework for making wise financial decisions today.”
Stocks and Bonds: Not Just About the Market is now available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kindle.
