After more than four decades in the family entertainment industry, entrepreneur and entertainment pioneer Frank Scurlock believes America needs to place a greater focus on something simple but increasingly overlooked: affordable family fun.
Scurlock, President and CEO of Scurlock Entertainment and a longtime leader in the inflatable amusement industry, says many families today face growing barriers to spending quality time together. Rising costs, busy schedules, and increasing digital distractions have made it more difficult for parents and children to share meaningful experiences.
“Families need opportunities to laugh together, play together, and create memories together,” said Scurlock. “Some of the most important moments in life happen when people put their phones down and simply enjoy each other’s company.”
The comments come after a career spent helping make family entertainment more accessible. Scurlock is the son of John and Frances Scurlock, pioneers of the inflatable amusement ride industry. Building on the foundation established by his parents, Frank founded Space Walk of America in 1980 and later helped expand family entertainment concepts through hundreds of rental locations and national retail partnerships.
Throughout his career, Scurlock has remained focused on one core idea: affordable family fun should be available to everyone, not just those with large entertainment budgets.
“When we started growing the business, the goal wasn’t just to rent products,” Scurlock said. “The goal was to create experiences that families could enjoy together without spending a fortune.”
According to Scurlock, the value of shared experiences extends beyond entertainment. He believes community events, family gatherings, local festivals, and recreational activities help strengthen relationships and create connections that are increasingly important in modern society.
“People are looking for connection,” he said. “They want experiences they can share with family, friends, neighbors, and their communities. Those moments matter more than we sometimes realize.”
Scurlock has spent much of his professional life studying entertainment and consumer experiences. His travels have taken him around the world, including more than 20 visits to Asia and a unique journey in 2015 when he visited every Disney park in the world within seven days.
Those experiences reinforced his belief that the most successful entertainment concepts are often the simplest.
“No matter where you go in the world, people want to spend time together and make memories,” he said. “That doesn’t change.”
While technology continues to reshape how people spend their free time, Scurlock believes there remains a strong demand for experiences that bring people together in person.
He points to community events, family attractions, church gatherings, school functions, and local festivals as examples of activities that continue to create meaningful experiences for families of all backgrounds.
“Entertainment isn’t just about amusement,” said Scurlock. “At its best, it brings people together.”
Looking ahead, Scurlock hopes communities, business leaders, and families will continue to support opportunities that encourage connection, recreation, and shared experiences.
“Life moves fast,” he said. “The memories people remember most are often the simple ones. We need more opportunities for families to spend time together, have fun together, and enjoy life together.”
