While millions of passengers travel through airports every year, few see the professionals working behind the scenes to keep operations running safely and efficiently. For Montreal resident Naimur Rahman, those responsibilities are part of everyday life.

As a ground crew professional at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport, Rahman works in one of Canada’s busiest transportation hubs, where teamwork, communication, and adaptability are critical to daily operations. Drawing on years of experience working on the tarmac through changing weather conditions, tight schedules, and high-pressure situations, Rahman believes some of the most important leadership lessons are learned far from the spotlight.

“People often think leadership is about having a title,” said Rahman. “What I’ve learned is that leadership is often about being reliable, communicating clearly, and supporting the people around you when conditions get challenging.”

Airport ground operations require teams to coordinate closely to help ensure aircraft departures and arrivals proceed safely and efficiently. Every shift involves collaboration among multiple departments, with employees often adapting quickly to weather changes, operational delays, and evolving schedules.

According to Rahman, the experience has reinforced the importance of remaining calm under pressure.

“In aviation, things can change very quickly,” he said. “You can’t control every situation, but you can control how you respond. Staying focused and working together is what helps teams succeed.”

Working through Montreal’s harsh winters has also shaped his perspective on resilience. From snowstorms to extreme cold, airport operations continue regardless of weather conditions, requiring workers to maintain both physical and mental discipline.

“When you’re working outside during a January cold snap, you learn a lot about perseverance,” Rahman said. “Everyone is dealing with the same challenges, and that’s where teamwork becomes even more important.”

Rahman notes that some of the strongest leaders he has encountered throughout his career are individuals who consistently lead by example rather than position.

“The people who earn the most respect are usually the ones who show up prepared every day, help others, and stay positive when things get difficult,” he said. “Those qualities make a real difference in any workplace.”

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Rahman remains deeply connected to the Montreal community. A devoted husband and father, he balances his career with family life, supporting his daughter’s competitive swimming activities while remaining active in local sports and community events.

He believes many of the same principles that drive success in aviation also apply to family life and community involvement.

“Whether it’s work, sports, or family, success usually comes down to consistency,” said Rahman. “You keep showing up, doing your best, and helping the people around you.”

As industries across Canada continue to navigate evolving workforce demands, Rahman hopes more attention will be given to the contributions of frontline professionals whose efforts often go unnoticed.

“There are a lot of hardworking people behind the scenes who help keep things moving every day,” he said. “I’m proud to be part of that.”
