Head football coach for the University of Massachusetts, Walt Bell, expressed a considerable amount of pride in the 15 latest potential football stars who signed their National Letters of Intent on December 9th with UMass. They will all take the field for the 2021 season.
Richardson, Who Announced Transfer in Sept., Commits to UMass
However, of the 15 new players who signed NLIs a several weeks before Christmas, one in particular stands out. Among those signing Letters of Intent was a defensive back transfer from the University of North Carolina, Bryson Richardson.
The six-foot, 200-pound defensive back played 11 games as a true freshman for the Tar Heels in 2018, before he redshirted the 2019 season, due to an injury to his Achilles.
Back in September of this year, Richardson announced his intention to transfer. He made the announcement via Twitter and Instagram, where he said the University of North Carolina had been great to him, and that the experience had been a great one, even though he felt that a transfer was necessary “to pursue his dreams.”
UMass Getting an Accomplished Recruit in Richardson
Richardson was a three-star recruit when he came out of Buford, GA to Chapel Hill, NC, and he was considered the No. 60 safety in the country and the No. 79 overall football player in the state of Georgia.
Richardson played 11 of his games as a true freshman with North Carolina in the secondary and special teams, where his stats showed four tackles, one interception, one quarterback pressure, and one pass break-up.
In one game alone, at Eastern Carolina during the 2018 season, Richardson recorded a tackle, a pass breakup, and a quarterback pressure, and he recorded his first interception at Miami less than three weeks later.
In high school, as both a safety and a wide receiver as a senior, he led Buford High School to a title in Georgia Region 8, as well as a spot in the Georgia 5A semifinals. As a freshman, he helped lead Buford to a 4A state championship title and back-to-back state final appearances as a sophomore and as a junior.
Richardson Could Be a Good Player for Massachusetts Football
When Walt Bell announced his latest recruiting class this past week, he praised the overall talent of his latest recruits and the “balance” they represent. He also praised the pure talent and maturity of two transfers, including Richardson, and he cited his ability to help everyone else move forward as an experienced addition to the team.
Therefore, it’s clear that the coaching staff at UMass has a lot of confidence in their latest recruiting class, including one Bryson Richardson.
