Local Cannon Beach Vacation Rental Company Succeeds Against Industry Giants
Beachcomber Vacation Homes Celebrates Five Years In Business

Despite the high wave of corporate-backed vacation rental companies such as Vacasa and Vrbo, locally owned and operated Beachcomber Vacation Homes Cannon Beach continues to thrive and grow after five years in business.

In 2014, business partners Brian Olson, Barbara Cool-Olson and Sally Wies pooled their collective thirty-four years of hospitality experience together and began Beachcomber Vacation Homes in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Driven by their vision of creating a vacation rental company focused on providing the best customer service in the industry, the partners opened their doors with one vacation home and a boatload of faith. Five years later, the business represents forty-six stellar vacation homes, with several additional homes soon to come on board.

Cannon Beach is world renowned for its matchless beauty, a point not lost on the corporate bosses of Vacasa, Vrbo, and Expedia/Home Away. Scuttlebutt in the vacation rental industry has for years touted the idea that replacing local vacation rental managers has been the goal of these corporate giants. With Expedia’s 2018 revenue exceeding 11 billion dollars, how can a small, local company succeed against such a giant?

“One main difference,” said Beachcomber’s Brian Olson, “is that this is our home. I grew up in Seaside. My wife came here in 1982 with her parents and her two small children. Three of our four kids live in the county, our grandson is here. Sally moved here thirty years ago. We know why so many people want to come to this beautiful place. We love it, too.”

“And we come to work every day,” said Olson’s business partner Sally Wies, “with the belief that everyone is unique. Every guest deserves our attention, every guest has their own needs, their own budget, and their own idea of what they want from us. Our job is to listen.”

Business partner Barbara Cool-Olson spoke to the importance of strong relationships with homeowners. “We think of our homeowners as our partners,” she said. “Communication is key. We’re in this together and our homeowners know that’s how we operate.”

“I always use this analogy,” continued Cool-Olson, “when explaining our approach to this business. We’re a teeter-totter. Our job is to keep everything balanced. We have our guests on one side, and our homeowners on the other. We know we’re doing our job when we’re literally on an even keel, when both the guests and the homeowners are happy. That’s been our goal from day one.”

When asked what the next five years will bring for Beachcomber Vacation Homes, all three partners laughed. “More of the same,” said Olson. “What could be better?”
